Road signs

What you get

644 signs, with the meaning explained

Recognition is a speed skill, but guessing from shape alone falls apart on the signs that look alike. Each sign comes with what it means and where you would actually meet it, so you are learning the system rather than memorising pictures — circles order you, triangles warn you, rectangles inform you, and the exceptions are worth knowing precisely because they are exceptions.

Practice that targets what you keep missing

Signs you have mastered stop coming back, so you are not re-answering the ones you already know. The signs you keep getting wrong come round more often. Your progress carries across your phone and laptop, so a few minutes waiting for a bus adds to the same picture as a longer session at home.

The signs learners actually get wrong

Level crossings, gated roads, and the difference between a prohibition and a warning account for a lot of lost marks. So do plates underneath a sign, which change what it means and are easy to read past. Practice is weighted towards the ones that cost people marks rather than spread evenly across signs you will never meet.

How signs show up in the theory test

Sign questions run throughout the multiple-choice section rather than sitting in one block, and some questions show the sign while others describe the situation and expect you to know which sign applies. Being able to name a sign is not quite the same skill as recognising what to do when you see one at speed.

Core signs first, not all 644 at once

Signs are graded by how much they matter to a learner. The core set covers what you are realistically going to meet in the test and on the road, and that is where practice starts. Advanced signs come next, and a reference tier exists for the ones you should be able to look up rather than drill. Trying to memorise all 644 in one pass is how people end up shaky on the signs that actually appear.

A better way to revise signs

Short and frequent beats long and occasional, because recognition decays without repetition. Five minutes a day for a fortnight will leave you sharper than one long session the night before. Work in the explanation rather than the picture alone — when you can say why a sign is that shape and that colour, the ones you have never seen before stop being guesses.

Common questions

Questions learners ask

Is the road signs practice free?

Yes. A free account saves which signs you have mastered so practice can focus on the ones you keep missing.

How many UK road signs are there?

More than most learners expect. Driving Mastery covers 644, grouped by category, with the ones learners most often get wrong weighted more heavily in practice.

What do the shapes and colours mean?

Circles give orders, triangles warn, and rectangles inform. Red circles prohibit, blue circles instruct, and there are exceptions worth learning directly rather than guessing.
