Speed limit signs
Maximum speed limit of 40 miles per hour
What it means
Forty is the legal maximum here and you MUST NOT exceed it. You will usually meet a 40 on a busier road leaving a town, or on a ring road that still has junctions, side turnings and people crossing. Build up to it smoothly, and drop below it if the road narrows or your view closes in.
