What it means
You are entering a 20 mph zone, so 20 is the legal maximum from here until an end-of-zone sign. A zone is traffic-calmed - expect humps, chicanes or narrowings - and it may also carry 20 mph repeater signs or 20 roundels painted on the road, though it does not have to. The limit applies from this sign either way, so do not wait for a reminder. You will meet these on residential streets and near schools - be down to 20 before you pass the sign, not after it.
