Road markings
Advanced stop line for cyclists
What it means
At some traffic lights there are two stop lines, with a box between them - coloured red in this picture, with a cycle symbol - where cyclists can wait ahead of other traffic. If the lights are amber or red you MUST stop at the first white line you reach (Rule 178), outside the box. If you had already crossed the first line when the lights turned red, stop as soon as possible: you MUST stop at the second line. When the lights go green, give cyclists alongside and ahead of you time and space to move off. The picture shows the wrong way on the left and the right way on the right.
