What it means
Brown means a tourist or leisure destination, and the symbol tells you which one - here a zoo, three miles away, off to the right at the junction ahead. You meet these on A-roads near attractions. Read it early: mirrors, get into the correct lane and signal in good time. Miss it and just carry on rather than braking hard.
