Rules of the road: what the DVSA theory test category covers
Rules of the road is one of the 14 DVSA theory test categories. What it covers, the difference between law and advice, and where learners lose marks.
Practise rules of the road questionsQuick answer
- Rules of the road is one of the 14 DVSA theory test topic categories, answered as multiple-choice questions.
- It covers junctions and roundabouts, speed limits, lanes, crossings, and where you may stop and park.
- Some of these rules are law, marked MUST or MUST NOT in the Highway Code. Others are advice. Knowing which is which is part of the topic.
This is the category that looks most like a rulebook, so learners revise it like one: read the rules, memorise them, move on. That works until a rule turns up in a situation you have not pictured, or an answer depends on whether something is the law or only advice.
What the category covers
Our rules of the road lesson works through these areas:
- Junctions and roundabouts: priority, lane choice, signalling and turning.
- Speed limits: how the limit depends on the road and on your vehicle, and what can change it.
- Lanes: multi-lane roads, bus and cycle lanes, and keeping crossings clear.
- Stopping and parking: where stopping and parking is banned or advised against, and who has the power to stop you.
Where learners lose marks
- Mixing up law and advice. The Highway Code uses MUST and MUST NOT for legal requirements. Its other rules are advice, but they can still be used in evidence in court.
- Learning one set of speed limits and forgetting that the vehicle changes them, not only the road.
- Answering from habit. The way a familiar junction is usually driven is not always what the Highway Code says.
