Hazard awareness: what the DVSA theory test category covers
Hazard awareness is one of the 14 DVSA theory test categories. What it covers, how it differs from hazard perception, and where learners lose marks.
Practise hazard awareness questionsQuick answer
- Hazard awareness is one of the 14 DVSA theory test topic categories, answered as multiple-choice questions.
- It is about reading the road early: anticipating what other road users are about to do, and whether you are fit to drive at all.
- It is not the hazard perception test. That is the separate video clip part of the theory test, and you must pass both parts.
Hazard awareness sounds like common sense, which is why it gets less revision than it needs. Spotting a hazard is the easy part. The topic is about what a clue tells you is likely to happen next, and what you do about it while there is still time to respond calmly.
Hazard awareness or hazard perception?
The two names are almost the same, and mixing them up is the first mistake. Hazard awareness is a written topic: you read a question and choose an answer. Hazard perception is the clip test, where you watch video clips and respond as a hazard develops. Each needs its own revision.
What the category covers
Our hazard awareness lesson works through these areas:
- Anticipation: where hazards come from, and how early you can see them coming.
- Reading the road: the clues in signs, markings and other road users' behaviour that tell you what is about to happen.
- Fitness to drive: alcohol, drugs, medicines, eyesight and tiredness.
Where learners lose marks
- Choosing the answer that describes what they noticed, rather than what they would do about it.
- Stopping at the first hazard and missing the next one.
- Treating fitness to drive as general knowledge, when the law, marked MUST in the Highway Code, sets requirements on alcohol, drugs and eyesight.
