Alertness is one of the 14 DVSA theory test categories. What it covers, from mirrors to tiredness, and where learners lose marks.
Practise alertness questionsQuick answer
- Alertness is one of the 14 DVSA theory test topic categories, answered as multiple-choice questions.
- It is about staying switched on: observation, mirrors and blind spots, what to do where you cannot see, distraction and tiredness.
- Most of it is Highway Code advice rather than law, with exceptions that are legal requirements, such as the ban on using a hand-held phone while driving.
Alertness looks like the easiest topic on the list, because of course you should concentrate. Learners lose marks by answering from what feels sensible rather than from what the Highway Code says, and the two are not always the same.
What the category covers
Our alertness lesson works through these areas:
- Observation: mirrors, blind spots, and looking well ahead rather than just in front of the car.
- Restricted views: what to do where you cannot see, such as at bends, junctions and past parked vehicles.
- Distraction: phones, sat nav, music and passengers.
- Tiredness: why it matters, and what to do about it before and during a journey.
Where learners lose marks
- Knowing mirrors should be checked often, but not the moments the Highway Code ties them to.
- Mixing up what the law bans with what the Highway Code advises against, especially with phones.
- Underestimating tiredness, and pressing on because the destination is close.
