Practise vulnerable road users questionsQuick answer
- Vulnerable road users is one of the 14 DVSA theory test topic categories, answered as multiple-choice questions.
- It is about the people most at risk on the road. The Highway Code names pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists, with children, older adults and disabled people more at risk still.
- Under the Highway Code's hierarchy of road users, whoever is in charge of the vehicle that can do the most harm carries the greatest responsibility to take care.
Almost every learner knows to take care around cyclists and pedestrians. Marks go on the detail: how much room, how slowly, who has priority at a junction, and what a person is telling you without saying anything.
What the category covers
Our vulnerable road users lesson works through these areas:
- People on foot: children, older people and disabled people, at crossings, at junctions and where there is no pavement.
- Cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders: passing them, turning across their path, and what to expect from them at junctions and roundabouts.
- Large vehicles, buses and trams: how they move and what they can hide from you. These overlap with the separate Other types of vehicle category.
Where learners lose marks
- Assuming a pedestrian or rider has seen or heard the car.
- Knowing to give plenty of room, but not the clearance and speed the Highway Code sets out for passing cyclists and horse riders.
- Missing what a white cane or a guide dog is telling you.
- Overtaking a cyclist just before turning left.
