Junctions
Turning right in a right turn box
The right-turn box gives you somewhere predictable to wait - it doesn't give you permission to turn, which is still a separate decision based on oncoming traffic and the exit road.
This video has no narration. Follow the written steps below.
Practical test
Why it matters
This checks right-turn positioning and patience together - using the box correctly still fails if you force the turn once you're in it.
What to look out for
A waiting position, not permission
The box gives you somewhere predictable to sit. It doesn't remove the need to judge the gap before you turn.
Check the exit before you commit
Before moving across the junction, confirm the road you're entering actually has space to receive your car.
Key steps
- 1 Check mirrors, signal right, and move into the right-turn lane or waiting box only when the lights and road markings allow it.
- 2 Position the car fully inside the waiting area, so straight-ahead traffic and any pedestrian crossing aren't blocked.
- 3 Keep the wheels straight while you wait, continuing to scan oncoming traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and the signal phase.
- 4 Complete the turn only when the oncoming lane is clear, the signal sequence allows it, and the exit road has space for your car.
Common mistakes
Entering the box without a clear plan
Only move into the waiting area when you can position safely and keep the rest of the junction clear.
Turning the wheels while waiting
Keep the wheels straight until you're ready to turn, so the car isn't pushed into oncoming traffic if hit from behind.
Watching only the traffic lights
The lights are one part of the decision - you still need a safe gap, a clear exit, and checks for pedestrians and cyclists.

Rule 179
Well before turning right, use your mirrors, signal, and position just left of the middle of the road, or in a marked right-turn lane.

Wait until there is a safe gap between you and any oncoming vehicle before turning. Do not cut the corner.
