Junctions
Turning right at multi-lane controlled traffic lights
At a multi-lane junction the lane decision usually needs to be made before you even reach the lights - sorting it out at the stop line is already too late.
This video has no narration. Follow the written steps below.
Practical test
Why it matters
This checks whether you can hold lane discipline at a wider junction, where drifting across lanes is easier to do and more likely to affect other traffic.
What to look out for
The lane decision happens early
At multi-lane lights, the real decision is often made well before the junction. Get the lane right first, deal with the signal after.
Finish in the matching lane
Don't just aim for the new road generally - finish the turn in the exact lane your approach lane leads into.
Key steps
- 1 Read the lane markings and signs early so you're in the correct right-turn lane well before the stop line.
- 2 Check mirrors, signal where it helps, and approach at a speed that lets you stop smoothly if the lights change.
- 3 If the light allows you to proceed, enter only when you can keep the turn organised and still judge the oncoming traffic safely.
- 4 Follow your lane through the turn and exit into the matching lane on the new road, without drifting across others.
Common mistakes
Choosing the lane too late
Use the signs and markings earlier so you're settled before the stop line, rather than making a rushed change right at the junction.
Drifting across lanes mid-turn
Commit to one lane path through the junction and steer into the matching exit lane, rather than letting the car run wide.
Focusing on the lights over the lane layout
Treat the signal phase and the lane discipline as two separate checks - a green light doesn't remove the need to hold your line.

Rule 175
You MUST stop behind the white 'Stop' line unless the light is green. On amber you may go on only if you have already crossed the line or are so close that stopping might cause a collision.
Read Rule 175 on GOV.UKRule 177
A green filter arrow shows a filter lane; you may proceed in the direction of the arrow when the arrow (or the full green light) shows, if there is room to clear the junction.
