Turning right at traffic lights: example 2

Every controlled right turn asks the same three questions - lane, signal phase, and gap - this is another chance to answer all three under slightly different conditions.

Core skill Step-by-step lesson Common mistakes

Practical test

Why it matters

This gives the examiner a second look at the same judgement - lane, phase, gap - under different traffic conditions than the first time.

What to look out for

The lights and the traffic picture, together

The signal tells you what's allowed. The traffic picture tells you whether it's actually safe right now.

Make your own decision

Even if another driver has just turned ahead of you, judge the gap yourself before you cross the oncoming lane.

Key steps

  1. 1 Read the signs, lane markings, and light sequence early so you know where the right-turn lane leads.
  2. 2 Check mirrors, signal right in good time, and settle into the correct lane before you reach the stop line.
  3. 3 Approach slowly enough to stop if the lights change, then wait with the car positioned safely while you judge oncoming traffic.
  4. 4 Complete the turn only when the lights, the oncoming traffic, and the exit road all make it safe.

Common mistakes

Copying the vehicle ahead

Use what the car ahead does as information, not permission - recheck the signal, oncoming traffic, and your exit before you move.

Letting the light distract from the gap

A green signal still requires you to judge oncoming traffic and pedestrians before you turn.

Entering before the exit is clear

Don't commit to the turn unless the road you're entering has room for your car.

Highway Code

This lesson is a revision aid, not a replacement for The Highway Code.

Rule 175

You MUST stop behind the white 'Stop' line unless the light is green.

Rule 179

Well before turning right, use your mirrors, signal, and position just left of the middle of the road, or in a marked right-turn lane.
