Quick answer

  • Your theory test pass certificate lasts for 2 years.
  • You have to pass your practical driving test inside those 2 years, not just book it.
  • If the two years run out first, you have to pass the theory test again - both parts.
  • You need the pass certificate number to book your driving test. If you have lost the certificate itself, you do not need a replacement.

When you pass, you are given a letter at the test centre with a pass certificate number on it. GOV.UK puts the rule in two sentences: the number lasts for 2 years, and you must pass your driving test in that time or pass the theory test again.

What the two years actually cover

The deadline is for passing the practical, not for booking it. A test date that falls after the certificate runs out does not save it, because GOV.UK says you must pass your driving test within the 2 years. Take the certificate to your driving test if you have it; if you have lost it, GOV.UK says you do not need a replacement, because the examiner checks your theory pass before the test starts.

So the date that matters is two years on from the day you passed. Write it down somewhere you will see it - the front of your licence wallet, your phone's calendar - because it is easy to lose track of while you are concentrating on lessons.

Why it catches people out

Two years sounds like plenty. It usually is, until the practical goes wrong. GOV.UK releases new practical test appointments 24 weeks ahead, so the test you book can easily be months away. If you fail, the next date has to be at least 10 working days away, and finding a slot you can be ready for can take a good deal longer than that.

A common way to get caught out is to pass the theory, take a long break from driving, and come back to lessons with a year or less left on the certificate.

  1. Note the date

Work out when your two years end as soon as you pass, and keep it with your licence details.

  2. Count back from it

Leave room for at least one retest, not just the first attempt.

  3. Talk to your instructor

They can tell you roughly how many more lessons you need, which is the part of the timeline you cannot see yourself.

  4. Book when you will be ready

Not simply the first slot available - a fail costs a fee and weeks, and that comes out of the same two years.

What happens if your theory pass runs out?

You have to pass the theory test again before you can pass your practical. That means booking and paying for a new theory test, and taking both parts - the multiple-choice questions and hazard perception - because you cannot carry a pass in one part over.

The theory test costs £23 to book on GOV.UK, the same as the first time. The bigger cost is usually time: the revision you did two years ago will have faded, and the rules have not stopped changing since.

Can you take the theory test again before it runs out?

GOV.UK does not describe taking the theory test again early to restart the two years. If your certificate is close to running out and your practical is not, contact DVSA's theory test enquiries team before you book anything, rather than paying for a test and finding out afterwards. Their contact details are on GOV.UK's theory test guide.

Frequently asked questions

Your theory test pass certificate lasts for 2 years. GOV.UK says you must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again.

What happens if my theory test runs out before my driving test?

You have to pass the theory test again, both parts. Booking a practical test for a date after the certificate runs out does not help: GOV.UK says you must pass your driving test within the 2 years, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again.

Do I need my theory test certificate for my driving test?

GOV.UK says to take your theory test pass certificate to your driving test if you have it, and you need its number to book. If you have lost the certificate, you do not need a replacement: the examiner checks that you have passed your theory test before the driving test starts.

Can I retake my theory test before it expires?

GOV.UK does not describe taking the theory test again early to restart the two years. If your certificate is close to running out, contact DVSA's theory test enquiries team before booking anything. Their details are on GOV.UK's theory test guide.
