Why it matters
Every manoeuvre is marked on control and observation together. Accuracy alone isn't enough - reversing without proper all-round observation, or into someone's path, can be recorded as a fault, and more seriously if a pedestrian or cyclist is put at risk.
What to look out for
Set-up beats steering
Where you position the car before you start decides how much correction you'll need. A good set-up needs very little; a bad one can't be steered out of.
Keep looking, keep it slow
Low speed and continuous all-round observation are what actually pass a manoeuvre - a perfectly placed car reversed without looking is still a fault.

- 1 Choose a suitable place and set up your position before you start - a parking manoeuvre is decided by where you begin, not by steering harder halfway through.
- 2 Before you move, look all around: mirrors, the blind spot behind you, and a proper look for pedestrians (especially children), cyclists and anything low or close to the car.
- 3 Reverse slowly and keep observing throughout - a manoeuvre takes several seconds, and someone can appear while you're moving. Reference points tell you where the car is, not whether it's safe.
- 4 Don't reverse further than you need to, and make small corrections rather than large ones - if the angle is badly off, resetting is usually quicker than fighting it.

Common mistakes
Only checking before you start
Observation isn't a one-off. Keep looking all around between glances at your reference points, because the situation changes while you move.
Relying on mirrors alone
Mirrors miss the area close to the car. Turn and look through the windows, especially for children and cyclists in a busy car park.
Reversing further than necessary
You're required not to reverse further than you need to - reset and start again rather than reversing a long way to fix a poor angle.
