Module 1 of 17

Introduction to the UK Driving Theory Test

Understand the two parts of the car theory test and build a study plan based on understanding, practice and review.

Reviewed against official GOV.UK guidance on 21 June 2026

What you will learn

  • Describe the multiple-choice and hazard-perception parts of the test.
  • Recall the current pass marks and time allowed.
  • Use practice results to decide what to revise next.
1

How the test works

The car theory test has two parts taken in one appointment. You must pass both parts. The multiple-choice section contains 50 questions and allows 57 minutes; you may review and change answers before finishing.

  • Multiple-choice pass mark: 43 out of 50.
  • Hazard-perception pass mark: 44 out of 75.
  • A pass certificate normally remains valid for two years.
2

What strong preparation looks like

Memorising isolated answers is not enough. Learn the rule, recognise how it appears in a road situation, then practise retrieving it without prompts.

  • Read the relevant Highway Code section before attempting questions.
  • Review explanations for both correct and incorrect answers.
  • Revisit weak topics after a delay instead of repeating one quiz immediately.
3

Plan from evidence

Use your question history to focus revision, but avoid drawing conclusions from one or two attempts. A short mixed-topic diagnostic gives a more reliable starting point.

  • Practise little and often.
  • Separate knowledge errors from rushed-reading errors.
  • Include official hazard-perception clips in your preparation.

Quick knowledge check

What must happen to pass the car theory test?

Apply it on the road

Situation

You score well in one short practice set and poorly in the next.

Reveal the safest response

Do not assume either result represents your true level. Review the explanations, collect a larger sample across the topic and then target the recurring errors.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming passing one part compensates for failing the other.
  • Learning question wording instead of the underlying rule.
  • Using unofficial practice material as the only source of truth.

Check your understanding

No dedicated question category is linked yet. Your lesson sections and inline knowledge check provide the completion evidence.
